Stolen from League of Extraordinary penpals

1. What are your plans for June
None at the moment other  than a dentist appointment to get my final crown put in. Also hoping my new glasses arrive so I can adjust  to them.

2. Your mid year resolutions or goals
I have a feeling this is going to be a dull Sunday Stealing.  No resolutions or goals.

3. Are you good at taking care of plants
No.  My mother could take a stick and make it bloom.  I can  take a blooming plant and turn it into a stick.

4. What makes you feel nourished
A good meal, I guess.

5. Which animals do you see most in your area
squirrels, which beg at ur back door for nuts..They say there are coyotes wandering around town, but I've never seen one.  I do occasionally see wild  turkeys.

6. Books on your summer reading list
I'm reading 4 books now, two books on the making of different TV programs, a book about Charles Lindburg, who was not nearly as nice a man as Jimmy Stewart (who played him in the movie), and a book called "Locked In," written by my friend Alec Clayton.

7. Projects you want to tackle this summer
I have no projects in mind.

8. Do you have weddings, graduations, summer celebrations
None of those, but our son's 53rd birthday party in Santa Barbara.

9. Which summer snacks are you excited to enjoy again
Fresh peaches, cherries, and pears.  And the strawberries sold at a strawberry farm near our house, which put all supermarket strawberries to shame

10. How much time do you like to take for vacations
If I'm gone more than 2 weeks, I start to get restless and want to go home.

11. How much has changed since last summer?
There is less fear of COVID, though it's still la serius threat.

12. Something that would be out of character for you
going on a long hike

13. What do you miss about winter?
the cold weather and please, dear God , rain!

14. Your favorite free / cost effective ways to have fun
Watching TV, of course!

15. Who do you trust most to house & pet sit
Ned and Marta have friends, and Marta has a step sister who house/pet sit for us.

Saturday 9

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: The Best (1991)

In memory of Tina Turner, who died on May 24.
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Tina Turner sings that she can think of no better place to be than her lover's arms. Since we're entering summer vacation season, let's switch it to: What's the best place you've ever traveled to?
Wow.  We've been to so many places.  I think of all the foreign trips we've taken the trip to Russia was my favorite because it was so different.  Now, of course, we wouldn't go there or the Ukraine, where we also visited.

2) Songwriters Holly Knight and Desmond Child originally offered this song to English pop singer Paul Young. He declined it. Can you think of a time when you said "no" when "yes" might have been a better answer?
Not offhand

3) Tina Turner was born in Nutbush, TN. In 1973 she recorded a song about it called "Nutbush City Limits." Is there a song about your hometown?
Well, since I was born and raised in San Francisco, yes.  How about "I left my heart in San Francisco."

4) It was at Nutbush's Spring Hill Baptist Church that very young Tina began singing with the choir. She credited those early performances with giving her confidence in front of a crowd. Are you comfortable with public speaking?
Not at all.

5) When she was a teen, her mom relocated the family to St. Louis. It was here that Tina played on the high school basketball team. Can you make a free throw?
Sure.  Will it go in the basket?  Definitely not!

6) Tina met her second husband, Erwin Bach, at the airport. A record exec, Erwin went to Heathrow to meet her flight and help her prepare for her London appearances. The last time you were at the airport, were you a traveler or were you meeting or dropping someone off?
I think I was last at an airport on our return from Venice after a Mediterranean cruise.

7) In 1991, the year this record was released, Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury died. What's your favorite Queen song?
Can't think of a Queen song.

8) Also in 1991, Disney's Beauty and the Beast became the first animated movie to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. What's your favorite Disney movie?
Bambi or Dumbo

9) Random question: What's your perfect day, weatherwise?
Clear sky with maybe some fluffy clouds, temperature in the low 80s

Healthy!

After 3 years, I finally had a face-to-face annual exam with my doctor.  When COVID came along, she started doing annuals on Facetime.  But she can see patients in real time and it was time for me to see her.  Ned had several things he wanted to ask her about and it's always good to have him along. English is not her first language and she has a strong accent that I can't always understand, but he does and can translate for me.

He was particularly concerned about some blisters on my legs.  She seemed to think they were OK, gave him medication to use and took a picture so he can send her an updated picture.

I have to admit that I was concerned about this appointment.  Too many things that "might" be a problem.  But my lab numbers, she said, were all good.  My blood pressure was good.  My weight, which has been the same number for years, was 10 less.  And she had nothing she was concerned about.  For the first time!  I guess Ned is doing a good job of keeping me healthy!

Indiana Jones

We'll be going to Santa Barbara for Tom's birthday next month.  Jeri is flying out to join us.  We frequently have family movie nights when we are all together and Ned suggested that we watch the new Indiana Jones movie, recently released.  Everybody is happy about that.

I remember seeing the first Indiana Jones movie and another one, but I don't remember which one.  I decided that my plan for this month is to see all of the movies to make me ready for the new one.  So I started with Raiders of the Lost Ark, which I vaguely remember (who can forget the opening sequence?)  But the thing that surprised me most of all was that Harrison Ford was so young, I couldn't recognize him.

I hadn't remembered how much violence there was in the movie, which seemed like one long chase scene after another, like our kids used to make when they were learning to make movies!  But I enjoyed watching it.  I don't think I'll be watching another one right away -- I have a whole month to see 4 movies.  Need to see something non-violent in between!

Walt and I watched the final episode of Miriam And Alan: Lost In Scotland last night.

What a fun show that was.  Just  the two of  them chatting together was fun enough, with Scotland being a plus.  I hope they decide to do a second season.

Today is National Donut Day, for all of you people who can still eat donuts.  I will enjoy them in memory.  :(

Marta has made sure that Walt and I are ready to be in company in Santa Barbara.  It's so handy to have her living here and we are SO grateful for her ministrations!

Nat'l Pen Pal Day

Today is National Pen Pal Day and I've been doing a good job of keeping up with my pen pals.  Some are more f un to write to than others, but after a couple of years there are a few who are beginning to sound like friends.

Oddly enough, one of my favorites is a guy named Jeremy.  When I started trying to find pen pals, the one thing I did not want was a male pen pal.  But I saw t hat he wrote something somewhere about weird things he had received and I wrote and told him about the time I had a potato sent to my friend Ann MacNab (founder of The Lamplighters).  We started corresponding  The nice thing about Jeremy is that he has made it a task to answer letters the day he receives them.  And I started doing the same thing with his letters.  Even if I have several older letters here, when I get one from Jeremy, I answer it immediately.  He's the guy who adopted a child from Kazakhstan, who was about 9 when we started corresponding.  I was so impressed with him as a father...and then, unexpectedly, the son died.  They went to wake him up in the morning and found him dead.  Doctors discovered he had some sort of congenital condition that they didn't now about.  I think Jeremy and I became better friends because we could discuss grief.

One of the things that is difficult when you lose a child is that everyone is afraid to talk with you about it because they don't want to upset you.  But they don't realize that talking about the child who died kind of keeps him "alive" for a bit.  Yeah, you might cry, but that's good too.  So I wanted to be sure to let Jeremy know how I felt as a mother with dead children and let him know he could talk with me about his son.

So I wrote to Jeremy today and to a couple of other people.  I probably have one more letter in me before the end of the afternoon.

The other thing I did was to complete SwapBot Swap.  It was to let people know whatyou watched on TV in the month of May.  Well, that was very easy for me to do because I've been keeping snippets of TV shows I watch every day on 1 Second Every Day, so I just had to go through all the entries I posted on 1SE.  This is what I posted:

This was a great Swap for me to do.  I’ve been keeping track of everything I watch this year, so these are the things that I saw in the month of May (does not include game shows, news programs, and shows on the Food Network).  With the exception of "The Last Thing He Told Me" all of these were on regular TV stations.

Aren't these amazing?
No way I could ever do anything like this!

Thank you, rain!

Like the irises a few weeks ago, we are now getting more roses than we have had in years.  Thank you, rain!

The first year that the 49ers won the Super Bowl, Tom and David were such fans that when I was at store that had roses to sell, I bought two "49er roses."  They bloomed red with yellow and were great.  That was many years ago and the yellow has disappeared, but the remaining red/pink roses are just beautiful.  And, like I said, I can't remember a year when there were so many (and buds still waiting to open)
