Saturday 9

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: Come On-A My House (1951)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this week's song, Rosemary Clooney offers us candy, peaches, pears, grapes, cake, etc. What tasty treat are you craving this morning?
I'm always craving donuts.

2) The song was co-written by a pair of cousins more famous for their other jobs. William Saroyan was a Pulitzer Prize winning author and Ross Bagdasarian created Alvin and the Chipmunks. Tell us about one of your cousins.
My cousin Peach (real name Carolyn) was my closest cousin (I have 32 cousins).  We spent a month together every summer, 2 weeks in San Francisco, 2 weeks in Citrus Heights, where she lived ever since I was in grammar school.  I was her maid of honor when she married and godmother to her first child.  We had a period of several years where we were not close, but later in life, we became very close and we spent one day/night a month with our other cousin, Kathy, in "cousins day," an overnight with my mother where we played cards from the moment we arrived until the moment we left.  Kathy and Peach both died of cancer and I miss them very much.

3) The song was inspired by the cousins' recollection of their Armenian relatives encouraging friends and family to visit by promising lots of food. Who most recently invited you to their home? What was the occasion?
We were invited to a Boxing Day party (December 26) at the home of our friend Stephen and his husband Richard.

4) This was a big hit for Rosemary Clooney. She got her start singing live on Cincinnati's WLW radio station. Today WLW is an all-news station. When you were a kid, what radio station did you tune into for the hits and new music?
I can't remember.  I know I listened a lot to KSFO in San Francisco, but that wasn't new music, more music of my parents' era.  I also listened to KKHI, which was a classical station.

5) Rosemary was also an actress, appearing in motion pictures and made-for-TV movies. The most famous is 1954's White Christmas. Have you seen it?
Many, many  times!

5) Yes, Rosemary Clooney is related George Clooney. She was his aunt. She appeared with him on ER and received an Emmy Award nomination. Do you enjoy doctor shows?
I am a huge fan of doctor shows and have watched almost all of them ever since Ben Casey in 1961

7) In 1951, when this song was #1, Yankees superstar Joe DiMaggio retired from baseball. He remained in the public eye, endorsing products and acting as Major League Baseball's ambassador around the world. His second marriage, a few years after his retirement, was almost as legendary as his baseball career. Without looking it up, do you know who his bride was?
Of course.  And they lived not far from where I was living.

8) Also in 1951, I Love Lucy premiered and has never been off the air since. That's right: for 72 years, without interruption, viewers have been entertained by the Ricardos and Mertzes. When you think of I Love Lucy, what's the first thing that comes to mind?
I think of two things -- The candy scene, of course (doesn't everybody?) and I think of my friend Jimmy, who was Lucy's friend and played backgammon with her every day and wrote a book about her after she died.

9) Random question -- You're playing roulette and suddenly doubled your winnings. Do you walk away when you're ahead, or do you stay at the table to play your winning streak?
Well, for one  thing I wouldn't be playing roulette, but if I were and doubled my winnings, I would definitely walk away!

                                                   PHOTO OF THE DAY

I love this picture.  Bouncer doesn't smile much these days.
She is 17 and more and more uncomfortable, limping
and dragging her back legs.  She is also more incontinent.
Sadly, she will be put down in the foreseeable future.

  2. Aw, so sorry about Bouncer. We've had to make that call in the past and it's always so hard.
32 cousins! Wow! As someone who had only 2 first cousins and isn't close to them I'm kind of jealous. I always wished I had been part of a big family. You knew someone who knew Lucy...how cool is that?!

  3. #1 There is always room for a donut.
#3 Being south of the border I thought Boxer day was the day you returned the gifts that you didn’t want.
#7 She lived in Connecticut for a while when she was married to Arthur Miller.
#8 Ditto, I liked the chocolate candy factory

  4. I haven't had a donut in a long time. We're Krispy Kreme people, I wonder if you have those out there? I wonder if I could write a book about someone else.
